If think you will be purchasing auto rental extras such as a CDW or insurance, shop around for rates on those as they can add to a whole load of extra money per day.
What's the mileage policy? 100 miles per day may be okay in Europe but will cost you a fortune in the USA.
You will pay more for an auto rental based on an Airport, so see if they have a local branch offsite, but remember to allow enought time to get your flight. Missing a plane can mean it's worth paying the extra for on site service at the airport.
Check both their auto rental national offers & regional offers, they won't tell you the best auto rental rate unless you ask.
Make your auto rental reservation as soon as you can, it's like hotels, the fuller they get the higher the price they charge. Also, smaller (cheaper) classes of autos will sell out faster and you may have to end up paying for a much larger rental vehicle than you want.
Some auto rental companies that are focussed on coporate business offer great weekend specials & off season rate. For those in the UK avoid times such as August when many auto rental fleets change their stock as they have a reduced number of cars in stock.
Consider booking a package deal including hotel accommodation.
Book a small auto and hope for a free upgrade.
Check out class discounts, if they are over stocked on much larger autos or utility vehicles they may be running a special.
If you can get them use coupons, check travel & airline magazines but read the small print. Most auto rental upgrade coupons can be based on availability. But, you must remember to present any coupons or discounts when making in your auto rental reservation.
Apply for any loyalty card programs for which you are eligible (Okay you may full price for six rentals but get one free, or free upgrades).
Ask if there are any upgrade specials available when you get to the counter.
