Check out class discounts, if they are over stocked on much larger autos or utility vehicles they may be running a special.
If you can get them use coupons, check travel & airline magazines but read the small print. Most auto rental upgrade coupons can be based on availability. But, you must remember to present any coupons or discounts when making in your auto rental reservation.
Apply for any loyalty card programs for which you are eligible (Okay you may full price for six rentals but get one free, or free upgrades).
Ask if there are any upgrade specials available when you get to the counter.
