Snoring is a condition well known to most people as it is believed that almost 50% of the population snore at sometime in thier lives and that half that number are regular snorers.
Why do we Snore?
Snoring occurs when the air flowing through the nasal passages and throat vibrate the muscles or soft tissues. As sleep becomes deeper then the muscles of the passages relax and become floppy and vibrate as the air is inhaled or exhaled past them.
There are a number of causes and conditions which start or make snoring worse and these are as follows:-
1) Sleeping on your back causes your tongue to narrow the airway and limit the airflow.
2) As you get older the muscles become weaker and the tissue becomes more floppy and vibrates more.
3) Overweight causes there to be excess floppy tissue that can vibrate.
4) A blocked or damaged nasal passage caused by allergic reactions, obstructions (such as polyps) or damage to the nose can causes more air to be breathed through the mouth as the air flowing through the nose is limited. As there is more floppy material in the mouth then there is more chance of snoring.
5) Alcohol and sleeping tablets help relax the muscles and help to cause snoring.
