How does it happen?
The root of every individual hair is in a follicle or tissue surround just under the skin. This follicle produces melanin in a number of pigment cells on a continous basis and this gives the colour to the hair. Basically the colour of the hair depends on the amount of melanin produced.
As people age then the pigment cells start dying off and the hair gradually goes gray as there is less colouring being carried out in the follicle. Eventually all the hair will go gray. Gray hair is usually coarser and thicker than normal hair.
There are some other rarer causes of gray hair and some of these are listed at the end.
Colouring hair
There is only really one practical way of keeping your normal colour and that is by using professional hair colouring to maintain or change the colour. This is often quite successful but it is essential to get the right match. A poor match can look worse than gray hair. The single most obvious give-away is that the roots start showing gray before the rest of the hair needs colouring but there are products which just deal with maintaining the root colour as an interim measure.
Often it is the time when there are gray and normal coloured hair together that worries people and the time that most effort is put in. A full head of gray hair can be very attractive.
Gray hair
Most hair care product producers claim that gray hair as it is coarser and thicker needs more care and there is a big market in conditioners and hair health care products and it is a case of finding what is good for you.
Other Causes of Gray hair
While the common cause is as above there are some other causes:-
1) treatment for diseases particularly cancer
2) Lack of vitamin B such as anemia, nutrition,
3) Smoking is believed to increase the speed of grayness
4) Thyroid problems
The major problem for many people is the acceptance that age is catching up and this can be a psychological problem for a while which should not be underestimated and is usually when people need to examine the options.
