Diabetes is caused when the body is unable to use glucose in the normal manner. Insulin, which is formed in the pancreas, controls the levels of glucose in the blood. In normal eating the insulin levels increase to control the extra glucose and help the cells turn it into the energy that the body requires and helps the liver absorb the remainder. The liver then releases the glucose when the body requires it, it can also produce glucose. When there is not enough insulin or it is ineffective then there is too much sugar in the blood and sometimes the urine and a wide range of problems occur.

a) There are 2 types of diabetes:-

Type 1 Where a person is not able to produce insulin in the pancreas. This usually occurs when the person is young, either a child or early adult and is treated by insulin injections or diet. It is a serious condition, which requires strict medical treatment and usually a complete change to the diet and fitness regime.

Type 2 Where the person is not able to produce enough insulin or that produced is not able to do the job required. This usually occurs in older people and can often be treated by diet or tablet but stronger solutions may be needed.

Symptoms

The symptoms for type 1 usually appear quickly and are usually obvious whereas type 2 appear slowly and many people ignore them until they have become quite serious. Both types show the same type of symptoms, although Type 1 can show other symptoms as well.

The usual symptoms are as follows:-

1) Increased thirst

2) Excessive tiredness

3) Loss of weight

4) Passing water particularly at night

5) Itching or thrush

6) In more extreme cases blurred vision can occur

c)Treatment

a) Type 1 Insulin injections are required for the rest of the patient's life and there is a need to maintain a healthy diet that contains the right foods. Injections are usually 2 or 4 times daily dependent on the doctor's analysis.

Regular check up with your physician is most important.

b) Type 2 Is typically a mild form of type 1 and usually occurs with age and can often be treated by diet or tablets and is very common. It is necessary however to keep checking and whilst that can be done by the patient it will need to be supervised by your medical practitioner.

There are believed to be as many undiagnosed type 2 diabetes sufferers, as there are diagnosed ones. Diagnosis can improve the quality of life immeasurably so if in doubt see a medical practitioner as soon as possible.
