Simply put the stock market is driven by supply and demand. The number of shares dictates the supply, and the number of shares that people want to buy dictates the demand. You must understand that for every share purchased, there is someone selling that share, or vice versa.
The main exchanges are the FTSE and NYSE stock market exchanges. These are where all shares are bought and sold, and to help set the price of the shares. In the USA nearly all of the trading is done through the Nasdaq, where as in the UK the majority of shares are traded via the FTSE index.
