The Lemon Law was introduced to protect consumers from products with serious defects. If an item cannot be satisfactorily repaired within a set timescale (usually within the warranty - or if the product is not 'as new' after many repairs, it is thus considered a "lemon". The lemon law gives you the customer redress with the manufacturer via lemon law. Every state has its own version of lemon law though.
Different lemon laws cover a different products. e.g. on a leased auotmbile which then develops one or more defects within the first year of purchase, the auto will likely be covered by the relavent state's lemon law on new auto's. The defect must be major, and commonly be something that severely affects the safety, operation, or value of your auto.
Like most laws, lemon laws are different from state to state, so you need to review local guidelines to establish what action you need to take. The basic rule is that any auto which is not in working order for thirty days or more, or any vehicle that has required repair of such defect on more than four occasions within the first year of purchase will be covered under lemon law.
Auto manufacturers may attempt to convince you that you waived your rights when you signed the lease contract, because of a clause that was inserted into the agreement. Any such clause or waiver is illegal, the lemon law still applies!.
Manufacturers may try to persuade you to engage in mediation rather than redress through the legal system. You do not have to participate unless the process complies with rules set out by the Federal Trade Commission. In some states, you must use mediation before suing under lemon laws, if the process is certified by the state's D of T. That said you are not required to accept any settlement that does not satisfy you.
